In front of a passionate crowd at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, the Iowa team demonstrated their prowess on both ends of the court. The home team's defense was particularly effective, registering five blocks and limiting their opponents to a field goal percentage of just 34 percent. Offensively, they were led by their accuracy from the free-throw line where they excelled with an impressive 83 percent success rate.

The game started off strong for the Hawkeyes as they outscored the Mountaineers by five points in the first quarter. Despite a second-quarter slump where they only managed six points against West Virginia's nine, Iowa came back fiercely after halftime. They dominated the third quarter with twenty-two points and maintained their lead through to the end of regulation time.

A key factor in this matchup was rebounding; Iowa outrebounded West Virginia by seven boards overall. This included thirty defensive rebounds which helped limit second-chance opportunities for their opponents. On offense, despite shooting only 23 percent from beyond the arc compared to West Virginia's slightly better performance at 26 percent three-point shooting, it was Iowa's ability to draw fouls and capitalize on free throws that made a significant difference.

West Virginia did not go down without a fight though; they managed to put up nineteen points off turnovers and had eight steals throughout the game. Their fast break execution resulted in thirteen fast break points but ultimately wasn't enough to overcome Iowa’s defense and consistent scoring.
