Lady Techsters Narrowly Outdone by Miners at Don Haskins Center
The Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters, with a season tally of 0-0, faced off against the UTEP Miners in a closely contested battle that ended with a score of 61-57. The Lady Techsters put up an impressive fight throughout the game but fell just short in the final quarter.
The Lady Techsters started strong, outscoring the Miners 17-15 in the first quarter. Their offense was led by their precision from two-point range, hitting 47 percent of their attempts. However, despite their efforts and maintaining a consistent scoring pace across all four quarters with 13 points in both the second and third periods and finishing with 14 points in the fourth, it wasn't enough to secure victory.
Louisiana Tech's defense managed to block one shot and steal the ball seven times from their opponents. They also demonstrated teamwork on offense with a total of 15 assists throughout the game. The team showed resilience under pressure as they fought for every point, converting free throws at an impressive rate of 78 percent.
However, turnovers proved costly for Louisiana Tech as they gave up possession on 16 occasions which translated into ten points for UTEP off those turnovers. Despite this setback, they managed to keep close behind UTEP's lead through six made three-point shots and five second-chance points.
On defense, Louisiana Tech gathered a total of seven offensive rebounds contributing to their overall count of 26 rebounds during playtime. Their defensive efforts were highlighted by securing eighteen defensive rebounds but were overshadowed by UTEP's stronger presence under both baskets which resulted in thirty-nine rebounds for them including eleven offensive boards.
The Miners capitalized on fast break opportunities scoring twelve fast break points compared to three by Louisiana Tech. Additionally, UTEP took advantage of turnovers more effectively than Louisiana Tech did; scoring fourteen points off turnovers while having an assist-to-turnover ratio lower than that of Louisiana tech at approximately one-third.
In terms of shooting accuracy from within the arc and beyond it; while both teams had similar success rates from three-point territory (Louisiana tech at twenty-nine percent and UTEP at twenty-one percent), it was inside where differences emerged – UTEP had better efficiency making fifty-one percent two-point shots against forty-seven percent by Louisiana tech which ultimately contributed to their win despite committing more personal fouls (twenty) than their counterparts (fourteen).
