The Tar Heels started strong, outscoring the Blue Devils 17-7 in the first quarter. However, Duke responded fiercely with 24 points to North Carolina's 13 in the second quarter. The third quarter was competitive, but North Carolina managed to add 16 points against Duke's 15 to their total. In what turned out to be a decisive fourth quarter, both teams scored 17 points each; however, it was enough for the Tar Heels to seal their win.

North Carolina's performance was marked by efficient shooting from inside the arc where they made an impressive 51 percent of their two-point attempts. Their overall field goal percentage stood at an effective rate of 49 percent. Despite struggling from the free-throw line with only a 46 percent success rate, they compensated by dominating points in paint where they scored a substantial total of 32.

Defensively, North Carolina also had an edge over Duke with more steals and blocks recorded during play – totaling at twelve steals and five blocks compared to Duke’s ten steals and four blocks. This defensive effort helped them gain extra possessions which translated into scoring opportunities.

On individual performances for North Carolina, it is worth noting that despite committing more turnovers than Duke (19 versus seventeen), they managed more offensive rebounds (seven) which led to twelve second-chance points – crucial additions that helped tip the balance in this tight contest.

Duke’s efforts should not go unnoticed; they fought valiantly throughout all quarters showing resilience especially after trailing early on. They shot well from beyond three-point range hitting eight out of twenty-three attempts which is rounded off as thirty-five percent accuracy from downtown.
