From tip-off at Purcell Pavilion, it was clear that the Notre Dame Fighting Irish were on a mission to leverage their home-court advantage against Virginia Tech. A critical aspect of Notre Dame's success was their efficient shooting from inside the arc where they made 24 out of 50 attempts resulting in a solid forty-eight percent conversion rate. Their field goal percentage stood at forty-five percent overall as they made twenty-eight successful shots from sixty-two attempts.


Virginia Tech struggled to keep pace with Notre Dame's scoring despite putting up a valiant effort themselves. Notre Dame also capitalized on turnovers, scoring fourteen points off turnovers thanks to aggressive defense leading to ten Hokie mistakes. Furthermore, fast break opportunities were seized upon by Notre Dame who scored eighteen fast break points showcasing their ability to transition quickly from defense to offense.


The Hokies did have moments where they shined defensively; recording seven blocks and five steals indicated that there was no lack of effort on their part. They also excelled at free throw shooting with an eighty-nine percent success rate but only had nine chances from the charity stripe compared to sixteen for Notre Dame who made eleven free throws for sixty-nine percent accuracy.
