Syracuse Stumbles at Carmichael Arena Against Formidable Tar Heels
The Syracuse Orange, ranked 25th, faced a challenging contest against the North Carolina Tar Heels at Carmichael Arena. The Orange's record now stands at 0-1 after a tough game that ended with a score of 51-75 in favor of the home team.
The Orange started off competitive in the first half with quarters tallying 14 and 16 points respectively but struggled to maintain momentum post-halftime, scoring only six points in the third quarter and finishing with fifteen in the fourth. Their overall field goal percentage was just 30 percent from an attempt of 71 shots. From beyond the arc, they managed to convert only six out of thirty attempts, resulting in a three-point shooting percentage of just 20 percent.
Defensively, Syracuse managed to block four shots and steal the ball seven times from their opponents. However, they committed twenty personal fouls over the course of the game which contributed to one player being fouled out. On offense, they recorded nine assists but were hindered by fifteen turnovers; fourteen attributed to players and one as a team turnover.
Rebounding was one area where Syracuse showed some strength; they pulled down a total of forty-three rebounds – nineteen offensive and sixteen defensive – along with eight additional team rebounds. Despite this effort on the glass, it translated into only eleven second-chance points.
In contrast, North Carolina showcased their efficiency on both ends of the court throughout all four quarters: nineteen points initially followed by thirteen before ramping up to twenty-five and closing with eighteen points in each respective quarter thereafter. They shot an impressive fifty percent from field goals overall and forty-one percent from three-point range.
The Tar Heels also had nineteen assists reflecting better ball movement compared to Syracuse's nine assists which resulted in an assist-to-turnover ratio more than double that of their guests (1.36 compared to Syracuse’s 0.64). Furthermore, North Carolina capitalized on turnovers better than Syracuse did by scoring twelve points off turnovers compared to nine by Syracuse.
