The game was held at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh and saw a strong start from the Syracuse Orange who outscored their opponents by four points in the first quarter. However, they struggled in the second quarter scoring only ten points compared to seventeen by North Carolina State. The third and fourth quarters were hard-fought with both teams exchanging leads but ultimately leading to an overtime showdown after ending regulation time tied.

The Syracuse team showcased resilience throughout the game. They dominated on rebounds with a total of 52 compared to North Carolina State's 40. Their defensive efforts were highlighted by five blocks and six steals which contributed significantly to their performance on court. Despite these efforts, personal fouls proved costly for Syracuse as they accumulated twenty throughout the game leading to one player being fouled out.

Offensively, Syracuse had mixed results; they shot an impressive perfect rate from free throw line making all seven attempts but struggled from beyond the arc with only eight three-pointers made out of thirty attempted (27 percent). Inside shooting was also challenging as they made just twenty of forty-nine two-point attempts (41 percent). Points in paint totaled twenty-two for Syracuse and their bench contributed sixteen second-chance points.
