Can Utah State Aggies Bounce Back Against San Jose State Spartans?
The Utah State Aggies women's basketball team is gearing up for a pivotal match against the San Jose State Spartans. After a series of challenging games, the Aggies are looking to regain their footing and prove their resilience on the court.
In their last encounter on December 19, 2023, against Western Colorado Mountaineers, the Aggies fell short by just two points in a nail-biting finish with a score of 49-51. Despite out-rebounding their opponents with 46 total rebounds and maintaining an assists turnover ratio of 0.92, they struggled from the field with only a 27 percent shooting accuracy and an even more concerning three-point percentage at 19 percent.
Two days prior to that game, on December 17th, USU faced off against Northern Colorado Bears where they were defeated with a scoreline of 57-75. The Bears' offense was too much for USU as they shot an impressive 48 percent from the field compared to USU's modest 43 percent. Turnovers were also an issue for USU as they gave up possession nineteen times which translated into ten points off turnovers for Northern Colorado.
Earlier in December (9th), during an away game at Rebecca D. Lockhart Arena against Utah Valley Wolverines, USU scored only thirty-eight points – their lowest this season – while allowing sixty-eight points on defense. A glaring concern was their high number of turnovers (twenty-four) which led to thirty-two points off turnovers for UVU.
However, it's not all doom and gloom for USU; there are positives to build upon. Their defensive rebounding has been consistent; they've shown tenacity in offensive rebounds and have demonstrated potential in creating second-chance opportunities.
As we look ahead to the upcoming game against SJSU at Provident Credit Union Event Center on February 22nd at around seven o'clock PM Mountain Time (MT), fans should expect a determined effort from USU to address these issues head-on. The key will be improving shooting accuracy both inside the paint and beyond the arc while managing possessions more carefully.
The Spartans will present another challenge but based on past performances; it is clear that when USU controls turnovers and capitalizes on rebounding strengths – especially offensive boards – they put themselves in contention regardless of opponent strength.
Fans can catch this anticipated matchup live as both teams vie for victory under the bright lights of Provident Credit Union Event Center or tune into local broadcasts if unable to attend in person. With strategic adjustments and renewed focus, this could be where we see Utah State Aggies turn things around this season.
