The Utah State Aggies entered the Mountain West - First Round - Game 3 with a determination to make their mark. However, the scoreboard at Thomas & Mack Center told a different story as the game concluded with the Aggies trailing behind the Boise State Broncos, 49-85. The Aggies now stand with an additional loss to their record, while the Broncos celebrate another victory.
From tip-off, it was evident that Utah State faced an uphill battle. The first quarter saw them put up 11 points against Boise State's 22. Despite a valiant effort in subsequent quarters scoring 8, 13, and finally rallying with 17 points in the last quarter, it was not enough to close the gap created by Boise State's consistent performance across all four quarters.
The statistics painted a clear picture of where challenges lay for Utah State. With only six blocks compared to nine from Boise State and eight assists versus twenty-four by their opponents, there were opportunities missed on both ends of the court for Utah State. Their shooting accuracy left room for improvement; they achieved a mere twenty-two percent field goal percentage from sixty-seven attempts and twenty-six percent from beyond the arc on twenty-seven attempts.
Utah State did show proficiency from the free-throw line making eleven out of fourteen shots which rounded up to seventy-nine percent accuracy but this silver lining was overshadowed by other areas where they struggled such as points in paint (14) and second-chance points (4).
Defensively speaking, Utah had thirty-three total rebounds against an overwhelming sixty-seven by Boise state which included only three offensive rebounds compared to fifteen by their opponents – highlighting one of many disparities between both teams' performances.
Despite these challenges, there were notable efforts on defense as well; nine steals contributed to fourteen points off turnovers showing glimpses of what could have been if other aspects had fallen into place.
