Cassell Coliseum Showdown: Virginia Cavaliers vs. Virginia Tech Hokies

As the Virginia Tech Hokies prepare to host their state rivals, the Virginia Cavaliers, at Cassell Coliseum, fans are buzzing with anticipation for what promises to be an electrifying encounter. The Hokies have been on a roll lately, and their recent performances suggest that they could very well extend their winning streak.

Looking back at the January 1 game against the North Carolina Tar Heels, the Hokies secured a narrow victory with a score of 68-65. Despite committing 20 turnovers and shooting just 38 percent from the field, they managed to pull through thanks to their impressive free throw accuracy of 88 percent and a solid defensive effort that included four blocks and three steals. This resilience in tight situations is something that could play in their favor against UVA.

The Cavaliers should not be underestimated though. They bring their own set of strengths to Blacksburg which could pose challenges for VT. However, if we dissect VT's performance further—particularly during their December 22 game where they dominated High Point Panthers with an astounding score of 86-66—it's clear that when VT finds its rhythm offensively, they can be unstoppable. Their field goal percentage was an impressive 56 percent while converting two-point attempts at a remarkable rate of 68 percent.

What stands out most is VT's ability to distribute the ball effectively; evidenced by racking up 21 assists in that game alone which speaks volumes about their team chemistry and unselfish play style. This level of teamwork will be crucial when facing UVA's defense.

The upcoming match-up will also test VT’s ability to control the paint—a feat they achieved by scoring an overwhelming majority of points inside against High Point—and whether or not they can replicate this success against UVA’s formidable frontcourt.

With all eyes on them, it will be interesting to see if VT can maintain its composure under pressure as it did during its recent games where despite being pushed into uncomfortable situations by turnovers or shooting slumps; they found ways to emerge victorious.

Fans eagerly awaiting this clash should mark their calendars for January 6th when these two teams face off at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg at midnight Eastern Time (ET). The game will also be available for streaming via ACC Network Extra on internet platforms ensuring no one misses out on what is shaping up to be another classic chapter in this storied rivalry.
