Clash at Don Haskins Center: Lady Toppers Narrowly Edged Out by Miners
The Western Kentucky Lady Toppers faced a challenging contest at the Don Haskins Center, ultimately falling short with a score of 73-68 against the UTEP Miners. The Lady Toppers' season record now stands at 0-1, while the Miners have kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 start.
From the opening quarter, Western Kentucky set an aggressive pace, outscoring UTEP with 19 points to their 13. The second quarter saw an intensified effort from the Lady Toppers as they added another 22 points to their tally. However, after halftime, momentum shifted as they managed only 12 points in the third and closed out with 15 in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Toppers showcased a robust defensive game with a total of four blocks and an impressive count of fourteen steals. Offensively, they distributed well among themselves totaling fifteen assists throughout the game. Despite these efforts, Western Kentucky struggled to maintain possession at times which is reflected in their twenty-one turnovers.
Western Kentucky's shooting was decent from beyond the arc hitting ten three-point shots for a solid forty-two percent completion rate but had room for improvement inside where they shot forty-seven percent on two-point attempts. At the charity stripe, they secured fifty-nine percent of their free throws.
On rebounding duties, Western Kentucky gathered twenty-eight boards including seven offensive rebounds which contributed to eight second-chance points but were outdone by UTEP's forty-three rebounds that led to twenty-two second-chance points for them.
A standout statistic for Western Kentucky was their ability to capitalize on turnovers; scoring twenty-one points off turnovers compared to sixteen by UTEP. However, this wasn't enough as UTEP's higher field goal percentage and more frequent trips to the free-throw line where they made seventy-one percent of shots gave them an edge.
Looking ahead after this hard-fought battle on court, fans can look forward to supporting Western Kentucky when they take on New Mexico State Aggies away from home at Pan American Center in Las Cruces on February 17th at 3:00 PM Central Time.
