In an evenly matched contest at KeyBank Center, both teams showcased their defensive capabilities with each side blocking over 20 shots; the Hurricanes blocked 25 while the Sabres had 23 blocks. The Hurricanes took control of faceoffs winning 34 out of 54 and displayed efficiency on their power play by converting one out of two opportunities. Despite this advantage and firing off a total of 32 shots on goal, they were unable to secure a win.

The Hurricanes' goaltender put up an impressive performance with a save percentage rounding to one hundred percent during regulation time and overtime but ultimately conceded one goal during the shootout. On offense, they managed to distribute their scoring across periods with one goal in the first period and another in the third.

The Sabres matched this intensity by also scoring two goals during regulation time which led to an intense overtime period where neither team could find the back of net leading to a decisive shootout. The home team's goalie mirrored his counterpart's efforts with thirty saves throughout regular play and overtime.

As for special teams' performance, both sides scored once on their respective power plays indicating strong offensive plays under pressure but equally robust penalty killing from each defense squad.
