The Hurricanes opened strong with two goals in the first period but were matched by three from the Blue Jackets. Despite an additional goal in the second period, bringing their total to three, it was not enough to keep pace with Columbus's consistent scoring across all three periods. The home team tallied one more in the second and added another two goals in the third to seal their victory.

Carolina's offense was active throughout the game, taking a total of 41 shots on goal compared to Columbus's 25. However, efficiency was on the side of the Blue Jackets as they capitalized on their opportunities with an impressive shooting percentage of 24 percent against Carolina's seven percent. The Hurricanes did manage to convert one out of five powerplay opportunities into a goal but struggled in faceoff win percentage during powerplays at only 40 percent.

Defensively, both teams were relatively even with Carolina recording ten hits and ten blocked shots while Columbus had eleven hits and fifteen blocked shots. In terms of giveaways and takeaways, both teams gave up possession four times; however, Columbus managed seven takeaways over Carolina's three.

In net for Carolina was a goaltender who faced twenty-five shots and made nineteen saves but ultimately took credit for the loss as six goals slipped past him. On special teams play such as shorthanded situations or powerplays, he maintained perfect save percentages yet could not fend off even-strength attempts where all six goals were conceded.
