First Period

The opening period saw both teams finding the back of the net once. The Hurricanes' powerplay unit capitalized on an opportunity with Shayne Gostisbehere scoring their sole goal of the game. However, this was quickly matched by Ryan McLeod from the Sabres, who showcased his offensive skills early on.

Second Period

The second period was pivotal for Buffalo as they took control of the game. Beck Malenstyn added to their tally with a well-timed shot that slipped past Frederik Andersen's defenses. Despite Carolina's attempts to regain momentum through aggressive play and maintaining possession, they were unable to convert these into goals.

Third Period

In the final period, Buffalo solidified their lead with another two goals. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stood out in goal for Buffalo, making crucial saves and denying any comeback attempts by Carolina’s forwards like Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov. The Canes struggled defensively as well; giveaways proved costly against an opportunistic Sabres offense.

Despite winning 57 percent of faceoffs and having more shots on goal than their opponents (30 compared to 21), what went wrong for Carolina Hurricanes was evident in missed opportunities and defensive lapses that allowed Buffalo to capitalize efficiently.
