Avalanche Struck by Lightning: Colorado's Effort Overpowered in Tampa

The Colorado Avalanche, with a record of 33-15-5, faced off against the Tampa Bay Lightning, who held a record of 37-13-3. The final score reflected the intensity of the game: 6-3 in favor of the home team.

In an electrifying matchup at Amalie Arena, the Avalanche were unable to overcome a powerful third-period surge by the Lightning. Despite scoring once in each period and maintaining an even strength throughout most of the game, Colorado's efforts fell short as they conceded four goals in the third period alone.

The Avalanche opened strong with a goal in the first period but were quickly matched and then surpassed by two Lightning goals. The second period saw both teams bolster their defenses, resulting in only one additional goal for Colorado. However, it was during the final stretch that Tampa Bay unleashed their full offensive might with four unanswered goals.

Colorado's goaltender faced an onslaught from Tampa Bay's attackers, saving 33 out of 37 shots on goal before two empty-netters widened the gap to a three-goal deficit. On offense, despite taking fewer shots than their opponents (31 compared to Tampa Bay's 39), they managed to convert three into goals thanks to precise shooting that boasted a ten percent success rate.

Special teams played a pivotal role as well; while both teams had opportunities on powerplays – three for Colorado and two for Tampa Bay – only one powerplay goal was scored throughout the contest by Colorado during one of their six-minute advantages at five versus four players on ice.

Faceoffs told another story where dominance fluctuated between periods but ultimately favored Tampa Bay with them winning 57 percent overall compared to Colorado’s 43 percent. This control at faceoff circles contributed significantly to setting up plays and maintaining possession which translated into crucial points for Tampa Bay.

Despite this setback, fans can look forward to seeing how their team will bounce back when they host Arizona Coyotes at Ball Arena on February 18th at 6:00 PM Eastern Time. The match will be broadcasted nationally on ESPN+ and locally available through ALT channel number 681 or SCRIPPS depending upon viewers' locations.
