First Period

The opening period saw both teams testing each other's defenses. The Capitals managed to take an early lead with a goal from Tom Wilson. The Blue Jackets had several attempts but were unable to convert any into goals, leaving them trailing as they headed into the second period.

Second Period

In the second period, Washington's offense came alive with three more goals. John Carlson and Jakob Chychrun were instrumental for the Caps during this stretch, contributing significantly to their team's offensive surge. Meanwhile, Columbus struggled defensively and couldn't find their rhythm on offense despite Brendan Gaunce's efforts in creating opportunities.

Third Period

Entering the third period down by four goals, Columbus finally found some success when Zach Werenski assisted on a goal that put them on the scoreboard. However, it was too little too late as Washington added another goal to seal their victory. Goaltender Elvis Merzlikins made 26 saves for CBJ but couldn't stop all of Washington's high-pressure shots.

Despite this setback for Columbus fans looking forward to future encounters between these two teams can take solace in knowing that adjustments will be made based on post-game thoughts from players like Werenski who expressed determination during post-game interviews.
