In an intense matchup at Madison Square Garden, the Dallas Stars were narrowly defeated by the New York Rangers. Despite a valiant effort and dominating with 42 shots on goal compared to the Rangers' 26, the Stars could not capitalize on their opportunities. The only goal for Dallas came during a powerplay in the second period which saw them convert one out of four chances with an impressive eleven shots taken during these advantages.

The Stars' goaltender had a busy night facing 25 shots and making 23 saves but ultimately took the loss as three pucks found their way past him; two during even strength play and one more into an empty net as Dallas sought to equalize late in the game. The defensive efforts included blocking an admirable number of attempts from New York – totaling at sixteen blocks throughout the game.

On offense, despite having no shortage of attempts with forty-two shots fired towards goal, they were hindered by their shooting accuracy which stood at just two percent. Their faceoff performance also left room for improvement as they won only twenty-seven out of sixty draws.

Conversely, while taking fewer shots than Dallas with twenty-six attempts on target, New York managed to find more success partly due to their twelve percent shooting accuracy. They also edged out Dallas in faceoffs winning thirty-three times and capitalized on one empty-net opportunity that sealed their victory.
