In a game where precision and resilience were on full display, the Oilers managed to outlast their opponents at the Bell Centre. Despite a goalless first period and trailing by one after Montreal's early lead, Edmonton maintained composure. The Oilers' goaltender was impenetrable after conceding an initial goal, finishing with a save percentage of one hundred percent after facing twenty-four shots.

Edmonton's offense fired forty-one shots towards the Canadiens' netminder who also showcased an impressive performance with thirty-nine saves. However, it was Edmonton's powerplay that turned the tide; they capitalized once during their five opportunities. This critical powerplay goal contributed to leveling the scoreline before heading into overtime.

The extra period saw heightened tension as both teams sought the decisive goal. It was here that Edmonton's perseverance paid off; they scored on their sole shot in overtime which proved to be the winning goal. This pivotal moment underscored their ability to clutch victory from tight situations.

Defensively, Edmonton blocked ten shots and delivered twelve hits throughout regulation and overtime, contributing to their robust defensive effort which limited Montreal's scoring chances despite both teams having equal faceoff wins at thirty each.

Offensively for Montreal, they managed only one powerplay goal from seven shots during four opportunities but failed to sustain this advantage as play continued. Their efforts were further hampered by Edmonton’s strong penalty kill unit which did not concede any goals while shorthanded six times.

Looking ahead for fans of the Oilers: The team will return home to Rogers Place for their next game against Toronto Maple Leafs on January 17th at 9:00 PM Eastern Time (7:00 PM local time). This matchup can be watched nationally on ESPN+ via internet broadcast networks.
