The Oilers struck first in the opening period but were quickly answered by two goals from the Blues, ending the period at 2-1 in favor of the visitors. The second period saw Edmonton level things up as they capitalized on one of their two powerplay opportunities to make it 2-all.

Edmonton's goaltender was formidable between the pipes, saving all but two of the 34 shots he faced throughout regular play and overtime. His counterpart from St. Louis also put on an impressive display despite being on the losing end, stopping 32 out of 35 shots.

The Oilers' offense was relentless as they fired off a total of 35 shots during regulation and overtime combined. Their efforts paid off when they scored an electrifying goal during overtime to seal their victory. This decisive moment was bolstered by strong performances across all lines and particularly effective play during even strength situations where Edmonton netted two goals against one by St. Louis.

Defensively, both teams were solid with numerous blocked attempts; however, it was Edmonton's ability to win faceoffs that gave them slight control over puck possession – winning just over half compared to St. Louis' forty-eight percent success rate in faceoffs.
