The game began with a promising start for the Canadiens as they dominated the first period by scoring three goals. However, despite outshooting their opponents with 42 attempts on goal compared to Pittsburgh's 30 throughout the game, they were unable to maintain this early lead. The Penguins fought back in the second period by netting two powerplay goals out of three opportunities and adding one more during even strength play.

The Canadiens' goaltender made noteworthy contributions with a total of 27 saves from 30 shots during regulation time and overtime but ultimately conceded four goals in the shootout. On offense, Montreal capitalized once on four powerplay chances while also managing to block 14 shots from reaching their net.

Pittsburgh's performance was marked by resilience as they overcame a three-goal deficit after one period. Their success was partly due to converting two out of three powerplays into goals and maintaining strong defense that saw them block 15 shots from Montreal. Moreover, Pittsburgh's goalie played a pivotal role by saving an impressive total of 39 shots throughout regulation time and overtime before making nine saves during the shootout.

As both teams battled through overtime without any change in scoreline, it was ultimately decided in favor of Pittsburgh through a tense shootout where they scored four times against Montreal's three successful attempts.

Looking ahead for fans of the Montreal Canadiens is another opportunity for redemption as they prepare to face off against New York Islanders at Bell Centre on December 17th at midnight Eastern Time. This upcoming contest will be available for viewing on MSGSN2 channel number 635-2 or via internet streaming on ESPN+.
