The Canadiens opened the scoring with two goals in the first period and maintained their lead until the second period when Tampa Bay responded with two goals to level the score. The third period saw each team netting one goal apiece, leading to overtime where neither team could clinch the win. Ultimately, it was during the shootout that Tampa Bay outscored Montreal.

Montreal's performance showcased resilience and determination throughout regular play. They registered a total of 31 shots on goal and successfully blocked 13 attempts by Tampa Bay. Despite not capitalizing on two powerplay opportunities, they managed to maintain an even strength across all periods.

The Canadiens' goaltender played a crucial role in keeping them competitive by making 27 saves over regular time and overtime combined. However, during the decisive shootout phase, despite saving four out of six shots faced, it wasn't enough to secure victory for Montreal.

On offense for Montreal were notable efforts resulting in three even-strength goals supported by five assists from various players across their lineup. Their faceoff performance was nearly balanced with a win percentage hovering around half at 49 percent but fell slightly short compared to Tampa Bay's slight edge at faceoffs won.

Tampa Bay's statistics mirrored those of Montreal closely; they also had three even-strength goals but edged out slightly higher in faceoff wins and takeaways which may have contributed marginally to their overall success on ice.
