The game started with the Canadiens taking an early lead in the first period by scoring one goal. However, they were unable to maintain their momentum in the second period as they failed to add to their tally. The third period saw them score once more, bringing their total goals for the game to two. Despite having fewer shots on goal than their opponents with only 14 attempts compared to 31 by the Islanders, they managed a shooting percentage of 14 percent.

Montreal's goaltender had a busy night facing numerous shots and made an impressive total of 28 saves throughout the game. The team's defense was also active blocking a significant number of attempts with a total count of 21 blocked shots. On faceoffs though, they struggled slightly winning only 22 out of 48 which translates into a faceoff win percentage just shy of half at around 46 percent.

The physical aspect was present throughout as evidenced by Montreal delivering a solid number of hits totaling at 23 during gameplay. However, discipline was somewhat lacking as they incurred five penalties amounting to thirteen penalty minutes including one major penalty.

On the other side, New York Islanders showed resilience after falling behind early on by scoring once in both second and third periods before clinching victory through an overtime goal which marked their only shot during extra time but proved decisive enough for securing those extra points in standings.

Looking ahead after this hard-fought contest at UBS Arena where attendance peaked at over seventeen thousand fans (17,255), Montreal Canadiens will next take on Ottawa Senators away from home ground at Canadian Tire Centre located in Ottawa on April thirteenth scheduled for eleven o'clock Eastern Time zone evening start which can be watched live via ESPN+ internet broadcast network.
