The Canadiens opened the scoring in the first period but were unable to maintain their lead as the game progressed. Despite their efforts, they only managed to net one more goal during the third period. The team's shooting accuracy was modest at seven percent with 28 shots taken throughout the game. The offensive effort yielded five points from two goals and three assists.

Defensively, Montreal struggled to contain New York's offense. The goaltending for Montreal was heavily tested as they faced a barrage of 45 shots from the Rangers' attackers and made an impressive total of 41 saves over three periods. However, this defensive effort wasn't enough to secure victory as four goals slipped past during regulation time and an additional empty-net goal sealed their fate.

The powerplay opportunities were scarce for both teams; however, Montreal could not capitalize on their single chance despite having a powerplay faceoff win percentage of sixty-seven percent. Conversely, New York took advantage of two out of three powerplay opportunities contributing significantly to their win.

In terms of physicality and puck control, both teams were evenly matched with Montreal delivering 22 hits and winning forty-two percent of faceoffs while giving away nine times compared to six by New York. The Canadiens also blocked sixteen shots but had less success in takeaways with only two compared to seven by the Rangers.
