The Prudential Center in Newark was buzzing with anticipation as fans of the home team, the Devils, filled most of the 16,018 seats available. The match started promptly at 7:08 PM local time and concluded after an intense three periods at around 9:32 PM. Despite their efforts and an aggressive gameplay that led to nine takeaways compared to eight by Toronto, New Jersey couldn't capitalize on their chances as effectively as their opponents.

The Devils' goaltender had a busy night facing 39 shots and making an impressive total of 34 saves. However, it wasn't enough to stop Toronto's offensive push which resulted in four goals past him and one empty-netter sealing their win. On offense, New Jersey managed two goals from twenty shots taken throughout the game but struggled to find more opportunities against Toronto's solid defense which blocked nineteen attempts.

Special teams played a crucial role in this matchup; while both teams had powerplay opportunities – two for New Jersey and three for Toronto – only the Devils were able to convert one into a goal during their man advantage time totaling just over two minutes. Their powerplay success rate stood at fifty percent due to this single goal from four shots taken while on powerplay.

Faceoffs were another area where New Jersey showed strength winning more than half (54 percent) compared to Toronto's forty-six percent faceoff win rate. This control at faceoff circles however did not translate into control over the game outcome.
