In what was an intense matchup at Prudential Center, the home crowd witnessed the Devils take an early lead but ultimately fall to a surging Penguins offense. The first period ended evenly with both teams netting one goal apiece. However, by the end of the second period, despite adding two more goals to their tally and leading 3-1, it was clear that maintaining this advantage would be challenging for the Devils.

The third period proved decisive as Pittsburgh unleashed an offensive onslaught scoring five unanswered goals. This remarkable turnaround was highlighted by their shooting accuracy; they managed to convert six out of twenty-one shots into goals for a shooting percentage of twenty-nine percent. Their powerplay unit capitalized on one out of three opportunities while their penalty kill remained unbreached throughout.

For New Jersey's part, they were able to generate three goals from twenty-six shots resulting in a twelve percent shooting success rate. Their powerplay efforts yielded one goal from four chances and they won forty-eight percent of faceoffs throughout the game.

Defensively, both teams were equally matched in blocked shots with eighteen each but it was Pittsburgh's goaltender who stood tall making twenty-three saves compared to fifteen by New Jersey's netminder.

Despite showing promise early on and demonstrating resilience through two periods, it was turnovers that plagued New Jersey; eight giveaways may have contributed significantly to their third-period breakdown.
