Second Period

As the second period unfolded, the momentum seemed to shift slightly in favor of the Blue Jackets. Despite several attempts by Timo Meier and Jesper Bratt for New Jersey, they couldn't find a way past Columbus's defense. The Blue Jackets capitalized on this opportunity and managed to score once during this period, narrowing down their deficit.

Third Period

The third period turned out to be decisive as Columbus came out strong and scored three more goals. Sean Monahan of CBJ was particularly effective during this stretch, showcasing his offensive skills that helped turn things around for his team. Meanwhile, Dawson Mercer tried hard for New Jersey but could only assist in one goal during this crucial phase.

Despite having more shots on goal throughout the game (33 compared to CBJ's 24), New Jersey struggled with converting these opportunities into points due largely due to missed chances on powerplays where they went 2-for-5 overall.

In terms of goaltending performance from Jake Allen who made some critical saves throughout all periods; however he couldn’t completely stop CBJ’s persistent attacks which resulted ultimately led them winning over NJD by final scoreline being recorded as '5-3'.
