In an intense matchup at the Canadian Tire Centre, the New York Islanders showcased their offensive capabilities by netting five goals on 26 shots for an impressive shooting percentage of 19 percent. The team's performance was bolstered by a strong powerplay that capitalized on their single opportunity and contributed one goal to their tally. The Islanders' success was also reflected in faceoff wins, where they dominated with a win percentage of 59 percent out of 61 faceoffs.

The first period saw both teams exchange goals, but it was during the second period that the Islanders took control with three goals. Their relentless pressure resulted in nine assists throughout the game and an overall plus-minus rating of +10. Defensively, they were equally robust; blocking a total of 31 shots and limiting giveaways to just twelve.

Goaltending played a crucial role as well; New York's goalie made significant contributions with twenty-eight saves from thirty-one shots against him for a save percentage just over ninety percent. This included five shorthanded saves from six shorthanded shots against him.

On the other side, despite putting up eighteen hits and blocking seventeen shots themselves, the Ottawa Senators struggled to find their rhythm offensively. They managed three goals from thirty-one shots for a shooting percentage close to ten percent but fell short on faceoffs with only twenty-five wins out of sixty-one attempts.

The Senators did manage to make use out of their powerplays though they had three opportunities compared to New York's one but only converted once despite taking six powerplay shots.
