The match began with the Penguins taking an early lead in the first period. The third period was equally competitive; both teams scored once more each before heading into overtime where the Islanders sealed their win with an additional goal.

Throughout this intense encounter at PPG Paints Arena, it was evident that even strength played a significant role for both sides. The Islanders capitalized on this by scoring all five of their goals during even-strength play while also maintaining solid defense under pressure. Their goaltender made an impressive total of 37 saves throughout the game and played for just under 61 minutes on ice.

Their efforts were supported by twelve blocked shots and ten takeaways which contributed to maintaining control over the game's flow.

Despite being outmatched in faceoffs – winning only twenty-seven out of sixty-four – and conceding more penalties than Pittsburgh (three compared to two), New York managed to keep its composure when it mattered most. They did not allow any powerplay goals despite facing two powerplay opportunities by Pittsburgh.
