First Period

The opening period saw the Sabres take an early lead, capitalizing on their powerplay opportunity to score their first goal. The Islanders struggled to find their rhythm initially but managed to hold off further advances from Buffalo thanks to solid defensive plays and key saves by goaltender David Rittich.

Second Period

In the second period, Mathew Barzal showcased his offensive prowess by assisting on a powerplay goal that leveled the score for New York. This equalizer was crucial as it reignited hope for Isles fans and set up a competitive atmosphere for the remainder of the game. Despite being outshot by Buffalo, Rittich's performance between the pipes kept New York in contention.

Third Period

The third period was marked by intense back-and-forth action. Emil Heineman stepped up for New York, scoring an even-strength goal that brought them level once again after Buffalo had regained a one-goal advantage earlier in this segment. Both teams displayed resilience and determination as they battled hard until regulation time expired without further goals.

Overtime and Shootout

With neither team able to break through during overtime despite several close calls, including five shots from New York's side that were expertly saved by Alex Lyon of Buffalo, it all came down to a shootout showdown. Unfortunately for Isles fans, Lyon proved impenetrable during this phase as well; he stopped three attempts while his teammates converted two out of three chances against Rittich.
