The first period saw both teams finding the back of the net once each. The Rangers opened their account with a goal from Barclay Goodrow, who would later be named the first star of the game. The Panthers responded quickly with their own goal during a powerplay opportunity, leveling the score at 1-1.

The second and third periods were marked by strong defensive plays and goaltending on both sides. Igor Shesterkin stood tall for New York, making 26 saves and earning himself second-star honors for his efforts. Sergei Bobrovsky was equally impressive for Florida, stopping 28 shots but ultimately taking credit for the loss.

Despite multiple powerplay opportunities throughout regulation time—4 for New York and 2 for Florida—neither team could capitalize further on these chances. Both teams also displayed physicality; New York registered 51 hits compared to Florida's 42.

In overtime, it was again Barclay Goodrow who made his mark by assisting on Chris Kreider's winning goal that sealed the victory for New York. This decisive play underscored Goodrow's pivotal role in securing two points for his team.

Florida had its share of missed opportunities as well; they managed only six shots during overtime compared to five from New York but couldn't convert any into goals despite having more faceoff wins overall (69 total faceoffs).

New York demonstrated superior puck control throughout most parts of this matchup—they won more faceoffs (52 percent) than their opponents did—and showed resilience under pressure situations such as penalty kills where they successfully defended against all attempts made by Florida’s special teams unit without conceding any additional goals beyond that initial one scored early on via powerplay advantage given earlier within opening minutes itself!
