In an intense matchup at the Wells Fargo Center, home to the Philadelphia Flyers, fans witnessed their team battle it out against their state rivals. Despite an energetic start that saw them take an early lead with a powerplay goal during one of their two opportunities in this aspect of play, which also accounted for all their points from assists, they could not maintain momentum throughout all three periods. The Flyers' shooting percentage stood at three percent as they managed to convert only one of their thirty-seven shots into a goal.

The physicality was evident as the home team delivered thirty-two hits over sixty minutes but struggled to capitalize on scoring chances and maintain puck possession. The Flyers won fifty-four percent of faceoffs but gave away possession eight times compared to four takeaways. Their defensive efforts included blocking ten shots and successfully killing off both penalties without conceding any goals while shorthanded.

On special teams, despite fewer opportunities than their opponents who had six powerplays compared to two for Philadelphia, both teams scored once with an extra man on ice. However, it was even strength where Pittsburgh found its edge by netting three goals from twenty-nine shots.

The Penguins' goaltender played a crucial role in thwarting Philadelphia's offense by saving thirty-six out of thirty-seven shots directed his way for a save percentage rounded up to one hundred percent. This performance between the pipes helped secure Pittsburgh's win along with timely scoring that included finding the back of the net twice in just under eleven minutes into play and adding another before halfway through regulation time.

Philadelphia's next game promises another chance for redemption as they host Montreal Canadiens at Wells Fargo Center on January 11th at 7:00 PM local time. Fans can catch all action live either online via ESPN+ or tune into NBCS-PH for television coverage right from their homes or favorite local venues.
