The home crowd of 18,190 fans witnessed an intense battle where both teams displayed strong offensive efforts. The Penguins opened their account early in the first period but found themselves trailing as they conceded four goals to the Capitals by its conclusion. Despite this setback, Pittsburgh showed resilience and managed to net two more goals in the second period while preventing any further damage from their opponents.

Pittsburgh's performance was marked by aggressive play which resulted in a total of 31 hits throughout the game. Their offensive push yielded three goals from 35 shots on goal, reflecting a shooting percentage of nine percent. The powerplay unit capitalized once during their three opportunities and demonstrated efficiency by winning an impressive 86 percent of faceoffs during these situations.

On defense, however, there were challenges as they gave away possession fourteen times compared to Washington's six giveaways. Despite these turnovers and being outscored in even-strength play where both teams scored three goals each, Pittsburgh's goaltender made significant contributions with eighteen saves on twenty-two shots for a save percentage rounding up to one hundred percent.

The Capitals' victory was aided by their effective shooting strategy that saw them scoring four goals from just twenty-two shots – an eighteen percent success rate – including one powerplay goal out of two chances. Their defensive effort also featured blocking twenty-three shots and successfully taking away seven possessions from Pittsburgh players.
