The game began with an impressive start by the Penguins as they netted two goals in the first period. Their offensive efforts were matched by their defensive prowess; however, they were unable to maintain this lead throughout the game. Despite outshooting their opponents with 30 attempts on goal compared to Calgary's 20, only three found the back of the net.

The Penguins showcased remarkable discipline and efficiency on powerplays, converting one out of five opportunities and dominating faceoffs during these crucial moments with an impressive win percentage of 86 percent. Their overall faceoff performance was strong as well, winning 61 percent across all situations.

On even strength though, it was a different story for both teams. The Flames managed to capitalize more effectively on their chances scoring three goals from just seventeen shots while at even strength. Conversely, despite taking more shots (24) during even play than any other situation in this matchup, Pittsburgh could only convert twice.

Pittsburgh's goaltender faced twenty shots and made sixteen saves but unfortunately took credit for the loss as four slipped past him into the net. On special teams defense specifically shorthanded situations - he successfully stopped two out of three shots faced.
