The Penguins opened scoring in the first period but were matched by an equally determined Islanders side. As play progressed, it was evident that both teams were on an even keel with regards to strength. The second period saw a surge from Pittsburgh as they netted two goals to take a temporary lead. However, their advantage was short-lived as the Islanders responded with two goals of their own.

Pittsburgh's offense was aggressive throughout the game, taking a total of 44 shots on goal and successfully converting four into scores. Their shooting accuracy stood at nine percent for this encounter. A notable aspect of their play was their performance during powerplays where they capitalized twice from just four shots and won three out of five faceoffs in these situations.

Defensively though, Pittsburgh struggled to contain New York's attacks which led to conceding five goals against twenty-seven saves made by their goaltender who had an overall save percentage rounded up to one hundred percent for this game. The team also blocked twelve shots and delivered thirteen hits during play.

On special teams, while Pittsburgh managed to keep New York at bay during penalties without conceding any goals from one shot faced; they could not maintain this resilience when shorthanded as they allowed two goals from eight shots against them.

They also capitalized on powerplay opportunities scoring twice out of eight attempts and blocked twenty-six shots over three periods.
