First Period

The opening period saw both teams testing each other's defenses, but it was Montreal who struck first. The Habs capitalized on an even-strength opportunity to take an early lead. The Pens struggled to find their rhythm and were unable to convert any of their chances into goals during this period.

Second Period

In the second period, the Canadiens extended their lead with two more goals. Their powerplay unit proved effective as they managed to score once during this segment. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh's attempts were thwarted by Montreal's solid goaltending and defensive plays.

Third Period

The final period witnessed a spirited comeback attempt from Pittsburgh. Bryan Rust emerged as a key player for the Pens, contributing significantly with one goal and one assist. His performance provided some momentum for Pittsburgh; however, it wasn't enough to overcome Montreal's advantage.

Despite outshooting their opponents with 38 shots compared to Montreal's 29, Pittsburgh couldn't bridge the gap created earlier in the game. Goalie Tristan Jarry made several crucial saves but ultimately conceded four goals throughout his time on ice.
