Sharks' Powerplay Goal Not Enough to Overcome Avalanche's Home Ice Advantage
The San Jose Sharks faced off against the Colorado Avalanche, with the Sharks entering the game with a record of 10-14 and the Avalanche at 17-8. The final score reflected a hard-fought battle, ending in favor of the home team, 3-1.
The Sharks showcased resilience throughout the match. Despite falling behind early due to a goal by the Avalanche in the first period, they managed to even out during a powerplay in the second period. This was their only goal of the night, coming from their sole powerplay shot and one of their eleven total shots on goal. The powerplay unit capitalized on one of their three opportunities thanks to an impressive display that saw them convert at five versus four strength after just 2 minutes and 11 seconds into that advantage.
Defensively, San Jose's goaltender put up an admirable performance with thirty saves on thirty-two shots before an empty-netter inflated his goals against tally. His save percentage for most of his time on ice was perfect until he was beaten twice while at even strength and once when San Jose had pulled him for an extra attacker.
On special teams aside from their successful powerplay conversion, San Jose also demonstrated strong penalty killing capabilities. They successfully fended off all but one shorthanded situation despite facing six penalty kills throughout the game.
San Jose's faceoff circle performance was notable as well; they won fifty-five percent of faceoffs overall which included dominating while shorthanded by winning eighty-six percent of those draws.
However, it wasn't enough to counteract Colorado's offensive pressure which resulted in twenty-four hits and thirty-three shots fired towards San Jose’s netminder. The Avalanche made good use of their six powerplays by scoring once and maintained control through effective puck possession as evidenced by eight takeaways compared to San Jose’s three.
As fans look ahead, they can mark their calendars for another chance to support their team when The Sharks host Detroit Red Wings at SAP Center at San Jose on January 3rd at 7:30 PM local time (PST).
