The San Jose Sharks, with a record of 10-14, faced off against the Columbus Blue Jackets, who came into the game with an 11-13 record. In a closely contested match at the SAP Center at San Jose, the final score read 4-3 in favor of the visiting team.

The Sharks opened their account early in the first period but were quickly matched by two goals from Columbus. The second period saw San Jose take a lead with two more goals to their name; however, it was short-lived as Columbus managed to equalize and then take the lead in the third period. Despite several attempts to level the scoreline again, including four powerplay opportunities throughout the game and converting one into a goal, San Jose couldn't find that crucial fourth goal.

San Jose's goaltender had an impressive night despite being on the losing side, saving 37 out of 41 shots for a save percentage rounding up to one hundred percent. The offense was not far behind as they managed three goals from thirty-one shots on target. Their faceoff win percentage stood slightly higher than that of Columbus at fifty-two percent.

On defense, San Jose blocked fifteen shots and delivered twenty-two hits over three periods. They gave away five penalties resulting in six penalty minutes but successfully killed all powerplays they faced without conceding any goals while shorthanded.

Columbus' victory was aided by their ability to capitalize on even-strength situations where they scored all four of their goals from thirty-seven even-strength shots. Their goaltender also played an essential role with twenty-eight saves for an identical save percentage as his counterpart from San Jose.
