The game began with promise for Tampa Bay as they netted two goals in quick succession during the opening period. Their offensive efforts resulted in a total of six points from two goals and four assists throughout the game. Despite this early advantage, they struggled to maintain control as Washington clawed back into contention.

The Lightning's goaltender faced an onslaught of shots from the Capitals' offense but managed to make an impressive 30 saves over three periods. However, it wasn't enough to stave off four goals by Washington that ultimately decided the match's outcome.

The attendance at Capital One Arena was recorded at 18,573 fans who witnessed both teams battling fiercely until the final buzzer marked end time just past midnight Eastern Time.

Looking ahead for Tampa Bay fans eager for redemption after this tough loss; The Lightning will next take on Buffalo Sabres at Amalie Arena located in Tampa FL USA (zip code:33602).
