Capitals and Blues Faceoff at Capital One Arena in Mid-January Matchup

As the Washington Capitals gear up to host the St. Louis Blues at the Capital One Arena, fans are buzzing with anticipation for what promises to be an electrifying game. The Capitals have shown a mixed bag of performances recently, but there's reason to believe that they could tip the scales in their favor this time around.

Looking back at their last game on December 24 against Tampa Bay Lightning, it was a nail-biter that went into a shootout, ending with a score of 2-1 in favor of Lightning. Despite the loss, there were positive takeaways for the Capitals; they outshot Lightning by 14 shots and had an impressive powerplay opportunity which unfortunately didn't convert into goals. Their goaltending was also noteworthy with a save percentage of 95 percent.

In contrast, when examining their performance against New York Islanders on December 21 where they secured a win with a scoreline of 3-2, it's evident that powerplay opportunities were capitalized upon effectively – scoring once out of three chances. This is something they'll want to replicate against the Blues.

The St. Louis Blues will be no easy opponent though; they're coming off strong performances and will look to challenge the Capitals' defense rigorously. However, if Washington can leverage their home advantage and maintain discipline while maximizing powerplay opportunities as seen in past games, they stand a good chance to dominate.

The key players for WSH will need to step up just like in their victory over NYI where special teams played an integral role – something that has been somewhat inconsistent throughout recent games but has shown potential for greatness.

It's clear that WSH must focus on maintaining puck possession during faceoffs – an area where they've struggled previously – as well as bolstering their defense against STL's aggressive offense. With strategic gameplay and robust execution from key players like those who shone during previous wins this season, WSH could very well emerge victorious.

Fans should mark their calendars for January 19th when these two teams clash at Capital One Arena at 7:00 PM EST. The game promises high stakes and thrilling hockey action which can be caught live on ESPN+ nationally or MNMT channel 642 for local viewers looking to support their team from home or within the roaring stands of Capital One Arena.
