The game unfolded at Little Caesars Arena where fans witnessed an aggressive start from the home team. The Detroit Red Wings established dominance early on by netting two goals in the first period and adding three more in the second. Despite being down by five goals, the Washington Capitals showcased resilience as they managed to find their rhythm and scored twice in quick succession during the second period.

The Capitals' efforts were highlighted by their powerplay performance where they converted one out of two opportunities. This goal came during a critical phase of play and momentarily shifted momentum towards them. However, this spark was short-lived as defensive lapses allowed for continued pressure from Detroit.

Washington's goaltender faced a barrage of shots throughout all three periods, making 23 saves but conceding eight goals against 31 shots from Detroit's offense which operated at an impressive shooting percentage of fourteen percent. The Capitals' defense blocked fourteen shots yet struggled to contain Detroit's attack which boasted twenty-six percent shooting accuracy.

Offensively for Washington, there were moments that shone through despite being overshadowed by Detroit's prowess on ice. With twenty-one shots taken and six points earned collectively through goals and assists, there was evidence of potential that could be harnessed in future games.
