The Capitals opened strong in the first period, netting two goals and setting an aggressive pace. The team's shooting accuracy was evident as they scored on 12 percent of their shots. Despite this initial burst, they were unable to maintain their momentum throughout the rest of the game. The Capitals ended up with six points from their efforts—two goals and four assists—but it wasn't enough to secure victory.

Defensively, Washington blocked a significant number of shots—19 in total—showing resilience in protecting their net. However, faceoffs proved challenging for them throughout the match; they won only 25 out of 62 faceoffs taken (a win percentage of just 40 percent), which may have contributed to their inability to control possession as effectively as they might have liked.

The goaltending for Washington was put through its paces; facing a barrage of shots from Carolina totaling at 44 attempts on goal during regulation time alone. The Capitals' goalie made an impressive 41 saves but ultimately conceded three goals before an empty-netter sealed their fate late in the third period.

On special teams play, both powerplay and penalty kill units had room for improvement. The powerplay opportunities did not translate into goals despite having three chances with one shot on goal during these times.
