Entering into what would be a decisive third period, Washington aimed for a comeback and managed to score twice thanks to efforts from Alex Ovechkin and Jakob Chychrun. However, Carolina responded swiftly by adding three more goals of their own—one being an empty-netter—effectively sealing their win over Washington.
