In the opening period, both teams came out strong, each netting a goal. The Capitals struck first with Anthony Beauvillier finding the back of the net on his only shot attempt for an impressive shooting percentage of 100 percent. However, this would be their only goal throughout the game as they struggled to capitalize on further opportunities.

Second Period

The second period saw both teams locked in a defensive battle with neither side able to add to their tally. Despite having three powerplay opportunities and managing one shot during these chances, the Caps couldn't break through Carolina's penalty kill unit. Washington's faceoff struggles were evident as they won just 36 percent overall compared to Carolina's dominant performance at 64 percent.

Defensively, Logan Thompson stood tall for Washington with several key saves among his total of 18 throughout the match. His efforts kept them within striking distance heading into what would be a pivotal third period.

Third Period

As play resumed in the third period, it was clear that momentum had shifted towards Carolina. They managed two goals while keeping Washington off balance and unable to mount any significant offensive threat despite multiple attempts from players like Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson who combined for five shots but couldn't convert those into points.
