First Period

The opening period saw an aggressive start from both sides. The Capitals managed to get on the scoreboard first with a goal that showcased their offensive capabilities. However, the Lightning quickly responded with two goals of their own, taking advantage of defensive lapses by Washington and establishing an early lead.

Second Period

In the second period, Washington's defense tightened up significantly. John Carlson played a crucial role in stabilizing the backline while also contributing offensively with his precise passing and strategic positioning. Brandon Duhaime added another goal for the Caps during this period, leveling things up and setting up an exciting final stretch.

Third Period

As tensions rose in the third period, both teams fought hard to gain control. The Capitals had several opportunities but struggled to capitalize on their powerplay chances due to Tampa Bay's resilient penalty kill unit. Logan Thompson made some key saves for Washington but ultimately couldn't stop all attempts as Tampa Bay netted one more decisive goal.

Despite outshooting their opponents 30-19 and winning 56 percent of faceoffs throughout the game, Washington's inability to convert powerplays into goals proved costly against a disciplined Lightning squad.
