Pirates' Late Surge Falls Short Against Marlins at PNC Park

The Pittsburgh Pirates faced off against the Miami Marlins in a closely contested game at PNC Park. The Pirates, with a record of 27-41, were looking to improve their standing but ultimately fell short with a final score of 3-2 in favor of the Marlins, who now hold a record of 25-40.

First Inning

The game commenced with both teams struggling to find their rhythm offensively. The Pirates managed just one hit in the first inning while keeping the Marlins scoreless and hitless. Despite some solid pitching from Mitch Keller, who maintained an ERA of 4.5 and allowed no runs initially, neither team could capitalize on early opportunities.

Third Inning

The third inning saw the Marlins break through as they scored two runs on two hits. This offensive burst was pivotal for Miami as they took control early on. The Bucs' defense had difficulty containing this surge despite Keller's efforts from the mound.

Fourth Inning

In the fourth inning, Miami extended their lead by adding another run to make it 3-0 after capitalizing on two more hits and an error by Pittsburgh’s fielding unit. This put additional pressure on Pittsburgh's lineup to respond offensively.

Eighth Inning

Pittsburgh finally found some momentum in the eighth inning when they scored two runs thanks to home runs by Ke'Bryan Hayes and Oneil Cruz. Hayes showcased his power with an impressive slugging percentage of .424 for this game while Cruz contributed significantly with his batting prowess.

Despite these efforts from key players like Andrew McCutchen who maintained a batting average of .250 during this matchup along with Nick Gonzales’ consistent performance both defensively (fielding percentage: 1) & offensively (batting average: .250), it wasn't enough for them to catch up completely before time ran out.
