East Carolina Pirates Narrowly Edged Out in Home Court Heartbreaker

The East Carolina Pirates faced a tough contest against the Memphis Tigers, with both teams showing determination and skill on the court. The Pirates, playing at home in Minges Coliseum, Greenville, were narrowly defeated with a final score of 72-70. This close encounter left the Pirates' record at an even stance while the Tigers improved their standing.

From the opening quarter, it was clear that this would be a closely contested game. The Tigers started off slow but picked up pace to lead by halftime. However, it was during the third quarter that East Carolina showcased their resilience and fighting spirit by outscoring their opponents 22-15.


Despite being outscored in fast break points 19-11 and points off turnovers 27-6 by Memphis, East Carolina's shooting accuracy was superior throughout the game. They boasted a field goal percentage of 46 percent compared to Memphis's 40 percent and were particularly impressive from the free throw line with an outstanding success rate of 93 percent.


The defensive efforts from both sides were notable; East Carolina managed to block six shots while Memphis had five blocks of their own. However, turnovers proved costly for East Carolina as they gave up possession twenty-four times which allowed Memphis to capitalize on these mistakes.


East Carolina's rebounding was strong as they collected forty rebounds over Memphis's thirty-six. This included thirty-two defensive rebounds which helped limit second-chance opportunities for Memphis who managed fifteen second-chance points.


One area where East Carolina struggled was in three-point shooting where they made only four out of twelve attempts resulting in a thirty-three percent success rate from beyond the arc. In contrast, despite having fewer attempts overall (fifteen), Memphis managed to sink six three-pointers achieving a similar percentage as East Carolina from long range.
