San Diego State Aztecs Edge Out San Jose State Spartans in Nail-Biter at Provident Credit Union Event Center

The San Diego State Aztecs emerged victorious with a tight 63-62 win over the San Jose State Spartans, improving their record to an undisclosed number of victories and defeats. The Spartans now reflect on their performance with a record that includes one more loss than before. The Aztecs showed resilience as they clawed back from an early deficit after trailing 13-21 in the first quarter. By halftime, they had turned things around by adding 18 points to their tally while restricting the Spartans to just 12, bringing the score to a much closer margin. The third quarter saw both teams scoring evenly, but it was in the final quarter where SDSU sealed their victory by matching their second-quarter performance with another 18 points.


A key factor in this victory was SDSU's impressive free throw accuracy which stood at an outstanding 86 percent, significantly higher than SJSU's respectable but lower 78 percent. Moreover, SDSU capitalized on turnovers effectively by scoring 24 points off them compared to SJSU's 11 points from similar opportunities.


SDSU also demonstrated strong defensive efforts with a total of twelve steals and limited personal fouls committed at thirteen for the entire game. Their ability to convert fast breaks into six crucial points also played a role in keeping up momentum against SJSU's defense.


On offense, SDSU made sure to utilize every opportunity inside the paint where they scored twenty-four of their total sixty-three points. Despite shooting only twenty-four percent from beyond the arc, they managed five three-pointers that contributed significantly to keeping pressure on SJSU throughout all four quarters.


The team effort was evident as thirteen assists were distributed among players showcasing effective ball movement against SJSU’s eighteen assists which indicated a competitive matchup in terms of teamwork and coordination.


While SDSU had fewer total rebounds than SJSJ (27 compared to thirty-eight), they made up for it through strategic plays resulting in twelve second-chance points and maintaining possession through only one team turnover during playtime.
