From the outset, both teams showed they were evenly matched with each side putting up 16 points in the first quarter. The Mustangs' performance was marked by aggressive defense and an ability to capitalize on turnovers, scoring 18 points off their opponents' mistakes throughout the game. However, despite their efforts and leading in offensive rebounds with a total of 19 compared to the Pirates' five, they could not maintain dominance on the scoreboard.

The SMU team's shooting accuracy from two-point range was notable at forty-four percent but struggled beyond the arc with only seven percent success rate from three-point attempts. Their free throw accuracy was impressive though; they made eighteen out of twenty-two attempts which translates to eighty-two percent efficiency from the line.

The Pirates showcased precision from long-range hitting fifty percent of their three-point shots which contributed significantly to their win.
