The Mustangs, who played host at the Moody Coliseum, improved their season record to an impressive tally while handing the Roadrunners another setback in their campaign.

From tip-off, it was evident that the Mustangs were on a mission to secure a home win. Despite trailing by four points after the first quarter, they surged ahead with an explosive second quarter performance, netting 27 points to overturn the deficit. The home team's offensive efforts were matched by their defensive tenacity; they amassed six blocks and ten steals over the course of action.

The SMU team's scoring was well-distributed among players, but it was their efficiency in converting opportunities that stood out. They shot 43 percent from field goals and nearly half of their two-point attempts found success. Their prowess inside was highlighted by scoring 38 points in paint – showcasing an ability to penetrate defenses effectively.

Moreover, SMU capitalized on turnovers with clinical precision – scoring 18 points off turnovers compared to UTSA's seven. This relentless pressure contributed significantly to SMU's lead expansion as they maintained control throughout the remaining quarters.

On offense, SMU also demonstrated superior ball movement which resulted in them racking up one more assist than UTSA’s total of 18 assists. Their assist-to-turnover ratio stood at an impressive 2.71 compared to UTSA’s less efficient ratio of just under one.

UTSA did show resilience despite being outplayed; they managed a respectable field goal percentage of 41 percent and excelled at free throws with a completion rate rounding up near eighty percent. However, this proficiency from the line wasn't enough as they struggled from beyond the arc – only making three out of seventeen attempted three-pointers for an eighteen percent completion rate.

Looking ahead for Southern Methodist University fans: The Mustangs are set for another challenge as they travel to face Rice Owls at Tudor Fieldhouse in Houston on January 31st at 7:00 PM local time (Central Time).
