UTEP Miners Dominate at Don Haskins Center with Commanding Victory Over Southern Utah

The UTEP Miners and the Southern Utah Thunderbirds faced off in a competitive encounter, culminating in a 89-62 victory for the home team. The Miners now boast an impressive record, while the Thunderbirds fell to a less favorable standing.

From the opening quarter, the UTEP Miners set a strong pace with 18 points against Southern Utah's 11. The consistency of their performance was evident as they matched this output in the second quarter. By halftime, it was clear that the Miners had established control of the game.


The third quarter saw an explosive performance from UTEP as they racked up 27 points, further extending their lead over Southern Utah who managed to score 24 points in their strongest quarter. The final period solidified UTEP's dominance with another impressive 26-point display against Southern Utah's 15.


UTEP's offensive execution was clinical throughout the game. They shot an efficient 49 percent from field goal range and were particularly effective inside, scoring a remarkable total of 52 points in paint. Their two-point shooting percentage stood at an impressive 55 percent.


On defense, both teams recorded two blocks each but it was UTEP that excelled with nine steals contributing to numerous fast break opportunities which resulted in them scoring thirteen fast break points. This defensive pressure caused problems for Southern Utah leading to twenty-one turnovers by them which were converted into twenty-five points by UTEP.


The Miner’s teamwork shone through with eighteen assists on thirty-four made field goals reflecting their cohesive playmaking abilities and resulting in an assists turnover ratio of approximately two-to-one (1.64). In contrast, Southern Utah struggled with ball movement registering only eleven assists and having an assist turnover ratio just above one-half (0.52).


Rebounding also played a key role; UTEP outrebounded their opponents by ten rebounds grabbing forty-three compared to thirty-three by Southern Utah which included thirteen offensive boards leading to seventeen second chance points for UTEP.
