Saints' Defensive Might Nearly Overcomes Commanders in Tight Contest
In a closely contested battle at the Caesars Superdome, the New Orleans Saints displayed a formidable defensive effort against the Washington Commanders, narrowly missing out on victory with a final score of 19-20. The Saints now stand at 5-9 for the season, while the Commanders improve their record to 9-5.
Defensive Highlights
The Saints' defense was relentless throughout the game, accumulating an impressive total of eight sacks and eleven tackles for loss. Cameron Jordan led this defensive onslaught with two sacks and two tackles for loss, contributing significantly to holding back the Commanders' offense. Ugo Amadi also made his presence felt with one sack and a tackle for loss, adding to his team-high seven combined tackles alongside Will Harris.
Tyrann Mathieu's forced fumble was another highlight, showcasing the Saints' ability to disrupt their opponents' game plan effectively. Despite these efforts and limiting Washington to just 20 points, it wasn't quite enough to secure a win.
Offensive Efforts
On offense, Spencer Rattler threw for 135 yards with one touchdown pass and maintained an average of over six yards per attempt. Alvin Kamara contributed both on the ground and through air receptions but found limited space against a tough Commanders defense, totaling only 12 rushing yards on five attempts while catching four passes for 58 yards including a touchdown.
Kendre Miller provided some spark in the running game with nine carries for 46 yards leading all rushers in average yardage per attempt among those with significant carries. Marquez Valdes-Scantling's two receptions amounted to 64 receiving yards making him one of Rattler’s key targets during critical moments.
Special Teams Contributions
Blake Grupe was perfect on field goals hitting both attempts including a long from beyond fifty yards contributing crucial points that kept New Orleans competitive until late in the game.
